NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS) ACTIVITIES

Independence Day

On 15th of August, the NSS Unit of the college celebrated Independence Day with great solemnity. The students gathered in the college campus early in the morning. The college was decorated with tricolor chains. The national flag was hoisted by the President of the college, Mr. Manabendra Mondal, along with the Programme Officer, Dr. Indrani Ghosh. A small cultural programme was organized by the NSS volunteers. Patriotic songs, recitation and drama were presented by the volunteers. The college President in his speech made the volunteers aware of the degrading value system of modern times and counseled the volunteers to follow the ideal of the great freedom fighters who laid down their lives for their motherland. The Programme Officer in her speech highlighted the importance of the day and inspired the volunteers to serve their motherland whole-heartedly. The programme ended with distribution of sweets and snacks among the volunteers and teachers present.

International Literacy Day

The International Literacy Day was celebrated on 8th September, in the college campus. A poster drawing competition was organized by the NSS Unit of the college for all students and NSS volunteers of the college. The theme of the competition was ‘spreading literacy’. A large number of students participated in the competition. The 1st year students were especially enthusiastic about the competition. Many students joined the competition on the day of the competition. The students came up with innovative ideas in their posters. The first position was secured by Liza Khatun, roll no165, of 1st year; the second position was held by Tanmay Chakrabarty, roll no. 243, of 1st year and Tuhin Mondal roll no. 57 again of 1st year secured the third position. Prizes were distributed by the Programme Officer and other teachers present in the programme. Snacks were distributed among all the participants present.

NSS Day

Like every year the NSS Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm by the NSS volunteers of the college. A seminar was organized to honour the occasion. The seminar started with the NSS song being sung by the volunteers. At the very beginning the Programme Officer, Dr. Indrani Ghosh in her speech highlighted the significance of the day and spoke at large about the history of the formation of NSS. She also spoke about Swami Vivekananda- the great inspiration behind the functioning of NSS. This was followed by expert speech by Professor Mintu Naskar. Prof. Naskar in his extensive speech highlighted the life and work of Swamiji. He largely stressed on the nation building ideology of Swamiji. In his enthusiastic speech, Prof. Naskar called upon the NSS volunteers to serve their motherland through NSS activities. The seminar ended with a valedictory speech by the Programme Officer. Refreshment was provided to all participants.

National Integration Day

The National Integration Day was celebrated on 19th November, in the college campus by the NSS unit of the college. A Collage competition was organized by the NSS Unit, in which the students of the college participated actively. At the beginning of the programme the Programme Officer highlighted the importance of the day and urged the students to maintain and spread harmony among all sections of the society. The programme was conducted in the hall-room where all the participants gathered. The first position was secured by Paramita Mondal of 2nd yr Hons., roll no.EH17; the second position was held by Tasmina Khatun of 2nd yr Hons., roll no. EH24; and the third position was held by Mousumi Halder of 1st yr Gen., roll no.11. The prizes were distributed by the Principal and other teachers of the college. The programme ended with distribution of refreshment.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day was celebrated in the college campus on 11th December instead of 1st December due to Mid-Term examination in the college. A Slogan Writing competition was organized by the NSS Unit. The theme for the competition was prevention of AIDS. Students of the college actively participated in the event. On the onset the Programme Officer spoke to the students about the menace of AIDS and the ways through which this disease is spread. She also spoke about the preventive measures and inspired the students to compose slogans against the spread of AIDS. The first position was secured by Tanmay Chakrabarty of 1nd yr Roll No.284 ; the second position was held by Bidisha Santra of 2nd yr Hons., roll no. BH42; and the third position was held by Subhajit Malik of 2nd yr Gen., roll no.103. The prizes were distributed by the Principal and other teachers of the college. At the end of the programme refreshment were distributed among the participants.

Swami Vivekananda’s Birth Anniversary

Swami Vivekananda’s Birth Anniversary is celebrated as the National Youth Day by the NSS Unit. The day is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the NSS Unit of University of Calcutta. A Rally is organized every year and this year was no exception. The rally started from University of Calcutta, College Street campus and ended at Swami Vivekananda’s ancestral residence at Vivekananda Road. The Principal of the college along with the Programme Officer and students participated in the rally.

Republic Day

On 26th January, the NSS Unit of the college celebrated Republic Day with great earnestness. The students gathered in the college campus early in the morning. Torrential rain and the chill of January couldn’t deter the enthusiasm of the young hearts. The college was decorated with tricolor chains. The national flag was hoisted by the Programme Officer, Dr. Indrani Ghosh. A small cultural programme was organized by the NSS volunteers. Patriotic songs and recitation were presented by the volunteers. The Programme Officer in her speech highlighted the importance of the day and inspired the volunteers to serve their motherland whole-heartedly. The programme ended with distribution of sweets and snacks among the volunteers and teachers present.
